Paper + Pen = Interaction

Spending the whole day trying to interact with the public using just pen and paper -
It was a challenge to figure out how we could first drive attention as well as encourage the public to interact with the very restricted items.
Whilst the project brief was being presented, I was imagining a form of clothing made out of the paper with some kind of quote stating - we are all equal. Something to state that we shouldn't be judged by the things we were.
After going through other ideas, we ended up with developing this idea further. Thinking of a white dress itself - we could target at 'bride to be's' and see whether they would design their dress
by drawing on them -
we scrapped that idea within the first half an hour.
-- thing is 'bride to be's' are very small number of targeted people and whether we could get many on the place we visit is pretty risky.
We spent a little time measuring and cutting and off we went
Unfortunately at first we had few looks of interest but no one interacted. We used our leftover pieces of paper and wrote 'calling all the bride to be's' and 'design this dress' but it didn't really grabbed anyone's attention.
So we pretended to be one of the publics and started interacting by drawing on the dress.
Then it started.
I have to admit there were some times where we went and asked people to doodle on the dress just to get others interested and it worked. But I feel that - doing this wasn't the greatest way of interacting.
In my opinion, I feel that if we were to do this project again, we could come up with a better idea which would make others come to us rather than us going to them to interact.
Looking at what the other groups did made me understand this concept of interacting better.
What I understood from it is that when it comes to designing and then presenting something, we must understand our audiences (the research on what interests them and what they haven't experienced before), and this should be clear on the design.
Then, we don't have to work hard on grabbing attention, the design will do that for us.
At the end, we were somewhat successful as we had lots of people interacting with our piece. We did change our ideas a lot during this project and the ended with various different responses from the public. Here are some clicks:
It was interesting to see how they posed for the pictures as well, it brought out their inner self and in somewhat they reflected on the original idea we had. -
Don't judge by the clothes we wear, there's more to it.
And these Londoners really show it.
